ONU Men’s Soccer OAC Champions

This past weekend, my roommates and I embarked on an exciting journey to Westerville, the vibrant home of Otterbein University. Our mission? To witness the thrilling OAC Championship match between the Ohio Northern Men's Soccer Team and Otterbein Men’s Soccer Team. We were all filled with anticipation, knowing that these two teams are fierce rivals both on and off the field. With Ohio Northern boasting a solid record of 12-5-3 overall and Otterbein with a record of 12-3-4 overall, we knew this match was bound to be a close one. Despite Otterbein's status as regular season champs, the absence of two of their top players and our ONU team's hunger for victory set the stage for an intense battle. As the girlfriend of one of the players and with many of my friends also on the team, I was ready to cheer my heart out. The Otterbein fans brought a spirited crowd, but our ONU section was not to be outdone, responding with passionate chants of our own.

The Polar Bears wasted no time in taking the lead, scoring just 12 minutes and 38 seconds into the game. Senior Will Shaffer, assisted by freshman Colin Gottron, found the back of the net, sending the crowd into a frenzy of excitement. It was clear that Shaffer was determined to win this game, as his passion and drive were evident after his goal. The Otterbein crowd couldn't hide their disappointment as we, the Polar Bear supporters, chanted with exhilaration. The momentum continued for the Polar Bears when junior Noah Zebrak executed a perfect header, with the assistance of juniors Stephen Duggan and Nolan Schirmer, extending the lead to 2-0 in the 36th minute. The Polar Bears were truly dominating the field, with most of the play happening on Otterbein's side. As the first half came to a close, the Polar Bears maintained their 2-0 advantage. However, the game took a turn when senior Cade Winchester was fouled from behind by an Otterbein player, resulting in a free kick. Sophomore Alex Shaffer took the kick and Cade Winchester with the opportunity to seek revenge, delivered a powerful header into the goal, further solidifying the Polar Bears' lead at 3-0. Of course, a jubilant dancing celebration followed. The Polar Bears seemed unstoppable. Unfortunately, the Cardinals managed to deny ONU a shutout with a goal from Carter Ely in the 83rd minute. Despite this setback, the Polar Bears proved to be no match for the Cardinals, ultimately winning the OAC Championship with a final score of 3-1. It was an unforgettable game, filled with incredible moments and a display of the Polar Bears' unmatched talent and determination.

The ONU Men’s Soccer Team has secured their spot in the NCAA Tournament following an impressive victory. Their upcoming match in the first round of the tournament will take place in Lynchburg, Virginia Saturday, November 11. Don't miss the opportunity to watch the game live and keep track of the latest stats!

As Always, GO BEARS!
