Beard by the Books: An Exciting Photography Opportunity
I recently received the exciting opportunity to travel to New York at the end of October to photograph and film a culinary event for the James Beard Foundation alongside Maddie Todorovich. The event, titled Beard by the Books: Celebrating the Dean of American Cuisine, is a two-night celebration of culinary arts, honoring the legacy of James Beard, a key figure in American cuisine.
The event is organized by the Research Chefs Association, a trade organization that blends culinary arts with food science, a discipline known as Culinology. The RCA represents chefs and food scientists involved in food product development, and its members play a vital role in improving the quality and accessibility of food for mass consumption.
The event will take place on October 24 and 25. The first night will be a private dinner for guests of the James Beard Foundation, and the second night will be a fundraising dinner to support the RCA’s mission. I feel incredibly honored to be part of this experience, as it not only allows me to capture stunning photographs for the event but also gives me the chance to build my portfolio.
This week, I had several meetings with my photography professors and Rae Staton, the university photographer at Ohio Northern. I gained a wealth of knowledge about different camera lenses, the types of photos they produce and which lenses will be best for this event. Even though I’ve been taking photos for a long time and have two favorite lenses, we’ll need ones that perform well in dim or low-light settings. We’ll be photographing chefs, food, dining tables and the event venue. It’s important to capture the atmosphere and the beauty of the chefs’ creations, which are truly works of art.
I’m also really excited about traveling to New York! I’ve only flown once before, when I was four years old, so this will be a big adventure for me. I can’t wait to see Times Square and, of course, try some amazing food. I’ll be sure to update you all once the trip is over. But for now, we’re busy planning the trip, deciding where to go, what places to visit and who might meet.
I’m incredibly grateful for this opportunity and have a feeling it’s going to be a great success. Fingers crossed!
As always, Go Bears!
