Reflections on My Capstone Journey

As the semester comes to a close, the deadline for my capstone project is quickly approaching. This week, we had our capstone presentations, where we shared our project topics and examples with the art department to gather feedback. The experience was definitely nerve-wracking. After dedicating so much time and effort to my capstone this semester, presenting it to those who will grade it most critically was intimidating. Still, their critiques gave me valuable insight and the opportunity to make changes that will ultimately improve my project. That said, hearing that adjustments are needed for something I’ve worked so hard on was a bit overwhelming.

This capstone has truly tested me. I conducted five photo shoots featuring my friends participating in outdoor activities while wearing their favorite outdoor clothing. My goal is to tell their stories and show how outdoor clothing helps them enjoy and excel in their activities. I took so many photos that I initially wanted to include all my favorites in the lookbook I’m designing. During my critique, however, I was reminded that less is more. This advice helped me refocus on the core message I set out to address and made it clear that I don’t need to cram every image into the final product.

The critique was a turning point. It allowed me to step back and simplify my approach, which has made the project more manageable. While the capstone isn’t officially due for another three weeks, I need to have it finished by Nov. 20 so it can be printed at the print shop. I’m aiming for a magazine-style binding, but the format I want has a 40-page limit. Now that I’ve pared down my images, I’m confident I’ll be able to meet this requirement.

Overall, I’m excited to finish my capstone and see everything come together. It has consumed so much of my time and energy, but I know the final result will be worth it. Over the next few days, I’ll be refining it to ensure it’s ready for printing!

I hope everyone’s semester is going well.

As always, GO BEARS!
