A Memorable Thanksgiving Break in Wisconsin

Last week was Thanksgiving break, and it started on a relaxing note. I spent the beginning of the week catching up on schoolwork, which felt productive and even met with a close friend for coffee. We had a great time chatting and catching up on life. By Tuesday, I had everything packed and ready for our family trip to Wisconsin where we would be spending the holiday.

On Wednesday morning, my family and I left for Wisconsin where most of our relatives live. My parents are originally from there, so we always celebrate Thanksgiving with extended family and save Christmas for a quieter celebration at home. We arrived at my grandma Sharon’s house, my dad’s mom, around 4 p.m. After relaxing for a short while, some of our family members joined us for dinner followed by an evening of card games.

Thanksgiving Day began with preparations for the big celebration at my grandma Roxi’s house, my mom’s mom. This year’s gathering was larger than usual with 37 people in attendance. It was heartwarming to see everyone and catch up on their lives. The food, as always, was incredible. My grandma and aunt spent hours making chicken wings, and we also enjoyed cheesy potatoes, green bean casserole, sweet potatoes, grape salad, broccoli salad, rolls, pork, mac and cheese and much more.

There were also more kids than usual this year, which made things lively and fun. My grandma had gifts for them, and we played games to keep them entertained. Despite the large crowd, my grandma’s spacious home fit everyone comfortably. After dinner, we played a family Pictionary game, splitting into teams of guys versus girls. The competition was spirited, and prizes added to the excitement. Dessert was just as amazing with pumpkin pie, cookies, brownies and a delicious African dessert made by one of our family members.

After such a full day, instead of returning to grandma Sharon’s house, we stayed overnight at my grandpa’s cozy condo on Lake Delton. It was a relaxing end to the day.

On Friday morning, we got an early start and drove two hours to visit my great-uncle Joey at the veterans home where he lives. We had lunch together at a Chinese buffet, which was a first for my younger cousins. Seeing their excitement over the buffet experience was adorable. My uncle Joey, as always, was so happy to see all of us. He’s such a kind and generous person, and spending time with him is always special. Afterward, we returned to the veterans home to chat for a bit before starting the three-hour drive back to grandma Sharon’s house for dinner and more time to relax.

The three days we spent in Wisconsin were busy but incredibly rewarding. We managed to pack so much into our trip, and I’m grateful for the time spent with family. On Saturday, we drove back to Ohio, arriving in the evening to relax. On Sunday, I returned to ONU and decorated our apartment for Christmas, officially kicking off the holiday season.

It was a fun-filled, relaxing Thanksgiving break, and I can’t believe the semester is almost over. Only two and a half weeks left! Time really flies. I hope everyone had a wonderful Thanksgiving as well.

As always, GO BEARS!
