Weekend at Home: Celebrating My Sister’s Birthday
Last weekend, I went home to celebrate my sister Sophia’s birthday. Her special day was on Saturday, but I arrived on Friday so we could kick off the celebration with a family dinner. It’s always a treat to spend time with my family, and we were all excited to try a new ramen and sushi restaurant. Ramen is one of Sophia’s favorite foods, so it felt perfect for her birthday dinner.
The evening was already off to a great start, but our waitress made it even more fun. She was warm, funny and clicked with our family’s vibe right away. Since my dad had to come straight from work and joined us a little late, there was a comical moment when the waitress called his name for the reservation, only to realize he wasn’t there yet. Once he arrived, she kept joking with him about being late to his own reservation, which had all of us laughing. It was a small but memorable detail that made the night even more enjoyable.
For appetizers, we ordered calamari, egg rolls and takoyaki (octopus balls), each one better than the last. Then came the main event: several sushi rolls arranged on a big boat platter and a steaming bowl of ramen we all shared. Everything was fresh and flavorful; we were definitely impressed by our new spot.
Back home, Sophia opened her gift from me, and we finished the night with some Halloween-themed Crumbl cookies (one of her favorites). The lineup was perfect for the season, and we enjoyed sampling each spooky flavor while catching up. It was one of those simple, joyful family moments that make you feel grateful for the people around you.
Saturday morning, we continued celebrating with my mom’s birthday brunch. She whipped up her signature Swedish pancakes with eggs, bacon and a fresh fruit salad. I’ve missed her cooking, and this meal didn’t disappoint. It was a cozy, delicious way to start the day and a perfect sendoff before I headed back to school that afternoon.
Overall, I feel lucky to have had the chance to celebrate Sophia’s birthday and spend quality time with my family.
As always, GO BEARS!
